Arlene B. Smith, 85, of Grinnell, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2006, in the Grinnell Regional Medical Center after a short illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Victor Baptist Church, Victor, by the Rev. Dan Andrews. Burial: Victor Memorial Cemetery. Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church. Arrangements with Nevenhoven Funeral Home in Brooklyn.
Arlene Byrle Horras Smith was. born Aug.25,1921,near Sigourney,1owa.
Her parents were Roy Samuel Horras and Minnie Christina Cox Horras.
Mrs. Smith received her education in Sigourney and Millersburg, graduating with the class of 1939 at Millersburg. She was married to Melvin Lloyd Smith on Sept. 21, 1940, at Killduff, Iowa. They were the parents of four children: Dean, Kenneth, Linda and Rhonda. They farmed at Killduff, Ottumwa, Millersburg,North English, Victor and Brooklyn, moving to Grinnell in 1998.
Arlene was a member of Victor Baptist Church. Arlene was a hardworking farm wife. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, homemaking and cooking. She opened her home to many for dinners.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Orville, Howard, Marvin and Dale Horras; and two greatgrandchildren, Gabriella Blycker and Matthew Doubleday.
Surviving are her husband, Melvin of Grinnell; four children, Dean (Jane) Smith of Grinnell, Ken J. (Donna Jo) Smith of Newton, Linda (Ed) Gross of Victor and Rhonda (Charlie) Klaassen of Brooklyn; a sister, Irene Smith of North English; 13 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
