Genevieve M. Brothersen, 82, of Tama and formerly of Guernsey, died August 7, 2006, at the home of her daughter, Patti Cline, of Tama. A funeral mass will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 12, at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Victor with the Rev. Brian Shepley, pastor of St. Bridget, officiating. Concelebrate priests will be Rev. Maynard Brothersen, retired and Rev. Mike Mescher, pastor of St. Patricks Catholic Church in Tama. Organist will be Vera Beth Bricker and vocalists will be Katie Cooney and Barb Neuhaus. Pallbearers are David S. Cline, Todd Brothersen, Brian Franklin, Spencer, Stuart, A.J. and Christian Brothersen and Nicholas Read. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Victor. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Bridget Catholic Church in Victor, St. Patricks Catholic Church in Tama, or Calvary Cemetery in Victor. The daughter of Michael and Alice Kibbie McGivern, she was born November 11, 1923, in Marengo. She was a 1941 graduate of Marengo High School and attended AIC Business College in Davenport. She played basketball in high school and participated at the Girls State Tournament and also in college, where she played in several major cities including, Mexico City, New York City and Nashville. On June 26, 1943, she was married to Harold R. Brothersen, at St. Patricks Catholic Church in Marengo. The couple farmed near Guernsey since 1948 and due to health reasons she had been living the last several years with her daughter, Patti Cline, in Tama. Genevieve raised her children at home, and for 25 years was employed as a waitress at the Star Inn, Dickies Prairie Home, and Brooklyn 80 restaurants in the Victor area. She was a member of St. Bridget Catholic Church in Victor and St. Patricks Catholic Church in Tama. She was a volunteer with several church and civic activities, including Teresan Study Club, Altar & Rosary Society, and Senior Meals in Victor. In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening, spending time with her family, and reading a good book. She enjoyed mowing her lawn, watering her trees, and bird watching at her bird feeders. Survivors include her children and their spouses, Patti (David) Cline of Tama, Bob (Barbi) Brothersen of Denver, Colorado, Peggy (David) Franklin of Spring Texas, Greg (Colleen) Brothersen of Cypres, Texas, Pepper (Dr. Karen) Brothersen of Kansas City, Missouri, Jack (Robin) Brothersen of Lakewood, Colorado, David (Debbie) Brothersen of Davenport, Darrel Brothersen of Cedar Bluff, Iowa, and Janelle (Milton Reed) Brothersen of Centennial, Colorado; one son-in-law, Bill Brandt of Paulina, Iowa; two sisters, Mary (Jim) Roegiers of Davenport and Alice (Dick) Beck of Bettendorf, Iowa; one brother-in-law, Rev. Maynard Brothersen of Davenport; two sister-in-laws, Rita Baustian of Grinnell and Jane (Fred) Bride of Raritan, Illinois; 17 grandchildren, David “Scottie” Cline, Dana Palmer, Andrea Cline, Todd Brothersen, Bobbie Jean Wunsch, Kelli Hawkins, Brian Franklin, Kari Trotter, Jenny, Christian, Spencer, Stuart, Alaina, A.J., and Jessica Brothersen, and Brooke and Nicholas Read; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold in 1978; one daughter, Jeannine Brandt in 1979; two sisters and four brothers.
