Carl was born the son of Otto and Lydia Wallentine Stiefel on June 13, 1914, in Burlington, Iowa. He was raised in Burlington and graduated from Burlington High School in 1932. He attended Burlington Junior College, Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio, and Chicago Theological Seminary in Chicago, Illinois. He also attended Oberlin Graduate School of Theology, Harvard Divinity School, the University of Chicago, and the University of Iowa. He was married to Elizabeth Carver on February 5, 1955, at Faith United Presbyterian Church in Burlington, Iowa. To this union was born their son Frederick. Carl was a United Methodist minister in a number of Iowa churches. He also was an educator, who taught high school English and Speech at West Burlington Arnold High School. Carl was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Burlington. He moved to Victor in 2003 and attended the United Methodist Church in Victor at the time of his death. He also had a fond connection with Christ Episcopal Church in Burlington. He was a full member retired of the Iowa Conference of United Methodist Church. Carl was inducted in the Army during World War II on October 29, 1943, at Camp Dodge, Iowa and served as a sergeant. He served his country honorably until his date of discharge on April 23, 1946 at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. He was a member of the Eastern Star, Chapter 98 in Washington, Iowa, the Historical Society of Des Moines County, Iowa, the National Education Association, the Iowa State Education Association, and a member of the Des Moines County Retired Teachers Association. He was a patron of the Iowa Poetry Association and was a master mason of the Iroquois Lodge number 590 in Nodaway, Iowa. Carl is survived by his son Fred Stiefel and his wife Betty of Victor; his three grandchildren; his brother Herbert Stiefel of Burlington, Iowa; and his sister Verda Peterson of Johnston, Iowa. Carl was ninety-two years of age and was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Elizabeth on February 24, 1999.
