Gladys was born the daughter of Preston and Ella Ebert Hartz on December 28, 1912, neat Blairstown, Iowa. She was baptized in infancy at St. Martins Church near Marengo, Iowa, and was confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Blairstown on May 9, 1926. She was raised in Blairstown and graduated from Blairstown High School with the class of 1930. She was married to Ross Burkhart on August 25, 1933, at Grace Lutheran Church in Blairstown. To this union were born their sons, Eldon and Renald. The couple resided in Blairstown much of their lives before moving to Victor, Iowa in 1957. They became members of St. James Lutheran Church in Victor, where Gladys was a member of the St. James Ladies Aid for many years. She was employed at Farmers Savings Bank in Victor and served as a teller. Gladys is survived by her sons, Eldon (Barbara) Burkhart of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Renald Burkhart of Victor; two granddaughters, Shawna Darden of Denton, Texas and Bethney (Jay) Ford of Senoia, Georgia; four great granddaughters, Amber Cambridge of Eagan, Minnesota, Ashley Darden of Denton, Texas, and Siara and Siena Ford of Senoia, Georgia; and several nieces and nephews. Gladys passed away Wednesday, June 21, 2006, at Belle Plaine Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was ninety-three years of age and was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ross in 1990; and three brothers, Ray, Roy and Virgil Hartz.
