Third Member of Family Taken
Carl Jensen of Holstein Succumbs in Hospital – V. Giese Hurt.
Holstein, May 17 – The old saying: “Ill fortune comes not singly,” has truly been verified in the Carl Jensen family. It was only a little over a year ago when the only daughter of the family was summoned, and she was called by death two years to the day after the only son had gone before, and now came the call to Carl, thus leaving the wife and mother along of a once happy family circle.
Carl George Jensen was born on a farm near Ida Grove, on August 14, 1893. He grew to manhood in the parental home. He had reached this stage when our country became involved in the World War. He along with many another was summoned to the colors and to arms. They left home in July 1918, for Camp Gordon, Georgia. After but a brief stay in camp, only about a month, they took ship for France, where Carl saw active service. He returned home on May 19, 1919. On June 2, of the same year, he was united in marriage with Miss Hertha Thorberg of Holstein. For the next three years they farmed the Jensen homestead. They moved to the farm north of Holstein, which they occupied since. As a prosperous farmer, Carl measured up in every way, same as he had as a soldier for his country. All in all, their married and home life was very happy. They were devoted to each other and planned and co-operated in such a way that they met with deserved success. In due time a little son came to gladden the home and then a daughter. Parental hearts full of happiness and hopes resulted. Then the clouds came and began to linger. The angle of death called the son and he went. After a time the daughter too followed, leaving father and mother behind. From this time on there was much tugging at the parental hearts and they lingered much and often with their children in their thoughts. Mr. Jensen gave expression to the wish more than once that he might be united with his children again. The immediate cause of his death was sinus trouble that he was afflicted with during winter and spring. It became so bad in course of time that he was hardly able to carry on or to think straight at times. Early last week he was taken to Sioux City, where he submitted to an operation. Not long after his life began to ebb away. He died Friday morning, May 2, 1930, at the age of 36 years, 8 months and 18 days. Left to mourn his going is his companion, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nels Jenson, four brothers, Gust, Axel, August, and Lester, and two sisters, Mrs. Maurice Shaw of Cresco, Iowa, and Mrs. Arnold Jurgensen. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in Turner Hall, conducted by Rev. A. W. Gauger. The American Legion was present and participated in the services at the grave, firing the usual salute at the grave of their dead comrade. Interment was made in Galva Township Cemetery.
