Last Rites For Alvera Rohwer Last Saturday
Alvera Caroline Rohwer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Rohwer was born at Ida Grove, Iowa, February 20, 1902 and died at the Passavant Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, August 20, 1930 at the age of twenty-eight years, 6 months and fourteen days. In her early infancy she was brought to Christ in Holy Baptism, and in the year 1916 she was confirmed in the Lutheran faith and received into the church. Her entire youth was spent in Ida Grove, where she attended the public schools from kindergarten to her graduation of high school in the year of 1919. After attending Iowa State College at Ames, Iowa, for one year, she completed her collegiate education at the University of Iowa at Iowa City, being graduated in the year of 1925; during this period she was very active in Campus and Sorority affairs and for a time was president of PHI Chapter of Delta Delta Delta. After leaving the State University she studied Voice at the McPhail School of Music in Minneapolis and with Herbert Witherspoon in Chicago. She taught English and Music in the High Schools at Kiron, Iowa, and later at Bradford, Illinois, until the spring of 1929 when she became ill coming to Ida Grove to recuperate until the first of January 1930, at which time she was engaged as Registrar in the Training School of the R. R. Donnelley Corporation of Chicago until March, when she was taken to the hospital with bronchial pneumonia and a number of weeks later was taken with a disease that was finally diagnosed as anemia of the spleen. After six blood transfusions and other attempts to save her life proved of no avail, she was submitted to a splenectomy as a last resort; her death, caused by pericarditis, occurred two weeks later. She leaves her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Julius Rohwer, four brothers and four sisters: Mrs. Fred Vander Linde, Long Beach, California; Orville J. Rohwer, Chicago, Ill.; Julius T. Rohwer, Denver, Colo.; Verona L. and Sylvia D. Rohwer of Chicago; Raymond H. Rohwer of Phoenix, Arizona; Harold C. and Mildred E. Rohwer of Ida Grove. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, August 23, by Rev. J. H. Iversen of St. Paul’s Lutheran church and burial was in the Ida Grove Cemetery.
