Oscar ship is Taken by Death; had lived in Ida Grove 35 years. Funeral held on Tuesday afternoon.
The funeral of Oscar A. Shipp of Ida Grove was held Tuesday afternoon, February 4 at his late residence on Seventh Street. Rev. C. A. Van Griethuysen of the Presbyterian church conducted a very brief service and Mr. Shipp was laid to rest in Ida Grove cemetery beside his son Charles, who died in 1918.
Mr. Shipp has been in declining health for the past two years, as is supposed that he sustained a light stroke of some kind at that time. He had been able to discharge his duties and to be around town until the early part of last November, when it is supposed that he had another attack. He gradually became worse and three weeks ago lost the power of speech. He was able to get into his chair until a short time before his death. His demise occurred at 4 a.m. on Sunday morning, February 2.
Oscar Alvin Shipp was born September 1, 1857 at Hummelstown, near Harrisburg, Pa., and lived to the age of 72 years, 5 months and 1 day. He attended school at Hummelstown and was married Feb. 17, 1880 to Hattie Beck. Had he lived two weeks longer he and his wife would have reached their golden wedding anniversary.
The family came to Ida county about 1890 and lived on a farm, 3 miles southeast of Ida Grove for four years and a half. In 1894, they moved into Ida Grove, which has since been their home. Mr. Shipp engaged in janitor work and for many years took care of the Masonic Hall and Presbyterian church in Ida Grove, besides other stores and residences. During the coming April he would have rounded out thirty years of service at the Presbyterian church.
Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Shipp: Catherine, Harry and Charles. The latter, a printer for many years with the Pioneer, died in the fall of 1918 from the flu. Mr. Shipp was the next youngest of a large family of brothers and sisters, all of whom have preceded him in death except one sister, Mary C. Ault of Lancaster, Pa. He is also survived by his wife. Mr. Shipp has been a member of the local Presbyterian church for many years. His memory is honored by many people in Ida Grove, for his industry, conscientious service, his quiet simplicity of manner and his integrity.
