(March 6, 1920 - April 15, 2013)

Margaret E. “Peg” Samson, age 93, of Ida Grove, Iowa, died Monday, April 15, 2013, at Morningside Rehab & Care Center in Ida Grove. Memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 18, 2013, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverend Richard Ball will officiate, with burial to follow in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Ida Grove. Military honors will be conducted by McNamara-Moore Post No. 61 of the American Legion. The family will greet friends at the church on Wednesday beginning at 7 p.m., with a Rosary at 7:30 p.m. followed by a Scripture Service. Born March 6, 1920, in Norwood, Pennsylvania, Margaret E. “Peg” Samson was the daughter of Russell and Elizabeth (Woods) Freas. Following her graduation from high school, Peg attended nursing school, graduating in 1941. She worked as a registered nurse at a New York Hospital for two years before joining the United States Navy Nurses Corp in 1943. While stationed in California, Peg met her future husband, Dr. Leo Samson, a Naval dentist. Peg was honorably discharged from the Navy in the spring of 1946. On September 4, 1946, she and Leo were married in Norwood, Pennsylvania. They made their home in California until his discharge from the service, then lived in West Point, Nebraska, for several years before moving to Ida Grove in 1950. Peg and Doc were blessed with five children, Russell, Elizabeth, Mary, Pat, and Paul. Peg raised her family, then returned to nursing at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and enjoyed playing bridge and golfing. Survivors include her husband; five children, Russell (Jean) Samson of West Des Moines, Elizabeth (Allen) Hilker of Ida Grove, Mary Samson of Sioux City, Pat (Stan) Junod of Ankeny, and Paul (Pat) Samson of Medicine Lake, MN; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-granddaughters; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.
