Elsie Eckhoff, age 100, of Battle Creek, Iowa, died Friday, February 1, 2013, at Willow Dale Wellness Village in Battle Creek. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 6, 2013, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Battle Creek, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverend Randy Cormeny will officiate, with burial to follow in Mount Hope Cemetery, Battle Creek. Visitation will be held at the church on Wednesday from Noon until the time of service.
Born March 13, 1912, on a farm northwest of Danbury, Iowa, Elsie Helen Hilborn Eckhoff was the daughter of Titus A. and Wilhelmina (Pieper) Schau. At an early age, Elsie moved with her family to farms in Jackson and Big Stone Counties in Minnesota. Following the death of her father, the family returned to the home place east of Danbury. After her mother’s death, Elsie stayed on the farm, keeping house for her brothers and sisters. On June 29, 1932, she was united in marriage to Oliver Hilborn in Elk Point, South Dakota. They made their home in Battle Creek. Oliver died in 1963. Elsie worked for the Western Light and Telephone Company from 1946 until 1959. In 1963, she and her sister owned and operated the P & H Market in Battle Creek until selling it in 1968. In 1969, Elsie married Lawrence Eckhoff. He passed away in 1987. Survivors include two sons, Beryl (Donna) Hilborn of Traverse City, MI, and Dean Hilborn of Ontario, CA; a son-in-law, Phillip Hanks of New Braunfels, TX; 9 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen Kinkade of Albert City; a sister-in-law, Thelma Schau of Battle Creek; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husbands, Elsie was preceded in death by a daughter, Marian Hanks; a grandson, Tom Hilborn; her parents; a daughter-in-law, Audrey Hilborn; two brothers, Albert and Titus Schau; and two sisters, Mary and Erna.
