(September 17, 1925 - January 28, 2013)Mildred Ernst, age 87, of Ida Grove, Iowa, died Monday, January 28, 2013, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 1, 2013, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverends Richard Salcido and Adam Peck will officiate, with burial to follow in the Ida Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Ida Grove on Thursday from 4-8 p.m.
Born September 17, 1925, in Battle Creek, Iowa, Mildred Irene Ernst was the daughter of Max and Katie (Haack) Spiese. She was baptized at the First Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in 1948. Mildred graduated from Battle Creek High School in 1943. Before her marriage, she worked at the Luna Theatre in Battle Creek and as a secretary for the superintendent at Battle Creek High School. In the mid 1970’s, she was employed as medical secretary for Dr. Earle Stine in Ida Grove. On November 9, 1947, Mildred was united in marriage to Raymond H. Ernst in Battle Creek. The couple farmed south of Ida Grove for many years. They were blessed with three daughters, Zolene, Kathryn, and Barbara. Mildred was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove where she was an active member of Circle #3. She cherished her friendships with fellow circle members and bridge clubs as well as her lifelong friendships with members of ODO (Our Day Off) Club, a neighborhood group which began nearly 60 years ago and still meets monthly. Mildred enjoyed playing cards, baking, and reading, and was especially proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be remembered for her strong faith and her thoughtfulness, always sending cards and well-wishes to her family and friends. Survivors include three daughters, Zolene (Gregg) Streck of Ida Grove, Kathryn (Dale) Edsen of Ida Grove, and Barbara (Dave) Ricker of Waukee; her grandchildren, Kara (Jim) Franzen of Titonka, Joseph (Lynette) Streck of Cumming, Andrew (Alicia) Edsen of Omaha, NE, Daniel (Kim) Edsen of Dallas Center, Eric Edsen of Omaha, NE, Nicholas Edsen of Chicago, IL, Rianne (Julia Porter) Pfaltzgraff of Oakley, CA, Sarah (Robert) Heidel of Colorado Springs, CO, Alex (Ashley) Pfaltzgraff of Waukee, Luke (Autumn) Ricker of Sydney, Australia, and Clint Ricker (fiancée Carol Meister) of Des Moines; and great-grandchildren, Tyler, Justin, and Alyssa Franzen, Jenna and Laura Streck, David and Chloe Edsen, Caroline and Grace Edsen, Mason, Madison, and Kennedy Pfaltzgraff, Kayla and Zachary Heidel, and Kaylee Ricker. She is also survived by five sisters, Katherine Kistenmacher, Bonita Diamond, Alice (Earl) Miller, Rebecca (Roger) Schmidt, and Linda (Bob) Mattson; a brother-in-law, Leonard (Marilyn) Ernst; a sister-in-law, Helma Hamilton; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; husband Raymond in 2005; a granddaughter, Rebekah Sarah Streck; a son-in-law, Scott Pfaltzgraff; two sisters, Maxine Feddersen and Marjorie Hansen; and a brother, William “Bill” Spiese.
