Henry N. Chappell was a resident of Hesper in the fifties and an active member of Friends church at Springwater in the sixties. Born in New York state, he grew to manhood in Ohio, where he married Matilda Benedict in 1845, and came to Hester in 1854. Mrs. Chappell was a sister of Mrs. Ansel Rogers, Mrs. L. D. Blackmarr, Harvey and Albert A. Benedict. Two of Mr. Chappell’s sisters—Mrs. Abel Matteson and Mrs. Silar Rogers—were also of the pioneers of Winneshiek. After seven years in Dickinson county Mr. Chappell moved his family to Battle Creek, Ida county, where they celebrated their golden wedding in 1895, aged 86 years and 10 months. A good man has gone.
