Obituary – Mary Ellen Ross
Mary Ellen Ross, daughter of George and Mary (McFadden) Yousling was born in Harrisburg, Pa., on December 30, 1863, and passed to her eternal reward at her home on South Rohwer St., Ida Grove, on Friday, June 15, 1956. She had attained the age of 92 years, 5 months, and 15 days. As a young girl she received her education in the public schools of Harrisburg, and it was also during these early years that she received the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior, becoming a member of the First Church of God in that city. At the age of fifteen, she came with her family to Iowa, where they settled on her father’s farm south of Ida Grove. There she grew to young womanhood, taking part in church activities in what was then known as the Pleasant Valley school and church. On September 27, 1891, she was married to Frank S. Ross, whose family also came to Iowa from Pennsylvania. All their married life was spent on the old Ross farm south of Ida Grove, where Mr. Ross passed away on February 27, 1941. She later moved to the home on South Rohwer St., in Ida Grove. To this union were born six children: Mary Blanche, now Mrs. Mace Todd; Bess, now Mrs. Charles Christie Sr.; Marion Jessen, all of Ida Grove; Edna, now Mrs. William Oswald of Fort Dodge and Nellie and Frank Jr., both of Ida Grove. Six grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren also survive their grandmother. A daughter, Mrs. Todd, six brothers and one grandchild preceded her in passing. Mrs. Ross was a very remarkable and beloved woman in her community, always wanting to help others. She was a faithful wife and loving mother, and will be greatly missed by all. Her long life came quietly to a peaceful end with many of her family at her bedside. She was quite active until the day of her passing. Her daily prayer gave her much comfort and final peace. Funeral services were held Monday, June 18, 1956 at 2 p.m. at Ida Grove, Rev. Arthur C. Marston of Storm Lake officiating. Mrs. Virginia Wellendorf accompanied Rev. Marston singing “Face to Face” and “Rock of Ages.” Pall bearers were: Walter Muller, Vincent Rogers, John Cope, Earl Ferguson, John Schultz, and Leonard Graham. Interment was at the Ida Grove Cemetery.
