Obituary – Otto Hollander
Schleswig – Funeral services for Otto A. Hollander were held Thursday afternoon at Friedens Evengelical and Reformed Church. The choir sang, “One Sweetly Solemn Though” and “Nearer My God to Thee.” They were accompanied on the organ by Mrs. Broder Petersen. Rev. A. F. Rinne read the following obituary:
Otto Asmus Andreas Hollander, a son of Andreas P. Hollander and Albertina, nee Stegemann, was born July 12, 1885, in Otter Creek Township; and died May 24, 1954, at the Denison hospital after a long illness. He reached the age of 68 years, 10 months and 12 days. He was baptized and confirmed in the Grant Township Lutheran Church, Ida County. At the age of 18, in 1903, he moved with his parents to Schleswig, and has made his home here since that time. He was united in marriage to Rosa Riessen on April 5, 1911. This union was blessed with one daughter, Elsabe, Mrs. Clarion Greene. Otto was a very familiar figure in our community for the past 50 years. He took part in the growth of the town. He was a member of the Volunteer Fire Department for 30 years; and served for 27 years as town clerk. He served one term as Mayor of Schleswig; was a member of the school board for many years and served as secretary and president of Friedens church. He was an active member of the Churchmen’s Brotherhood and attended regularly until ill health overtook him. He had a record of going to Brotherhood for almost seven years without missing a meeting. He also served as a member of the Morgan Cemetery association up until the time of his death. In 1907, he started to work as a lineman for the Schleswig Telephone Company and held this job until 1950 when he became secretary and manager. About two years ago it was discovered that he was suffering from an incurable disease. Howerver, he was able to be up and to look after his business until last Christmas when he became seriously ill. Since that time his condition grew steadily worse. His wife devotedly cared for him during these last months. Mr. Hollander was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He will be missed by the community he had been so much a part of, for so many years. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, a sister, Marie, and an infant brother. He leaves to mourn his death his beloved wife, Rosa, his daughter, Elsabe, his son-in-law, Clarion Greene and a grandson, Billy Greene, all of Denison; three sisters, Mrs. Laura Iverson of Omaha; Mrs. Caroline Christensen and Mrs. Minnie Klotz, both of Schleswig; besides many other relatives and friends. Burial was made in the Morgan Cemetery. The pall bearers were: Leonard P. Hollander, John H. Evers, Julius Braase, Theo. C. Lohse, Walter Miller and Harold Riessen. Honorary pallbearers were: Tony Hansen, Hugo Reimer, John Baeth, Gustav Else, Charles Jurgensen, Louie G. Reimer, Louis Kastner and Henry Hollander.
