Otto Schumann Sr., 74, Dies At Battle Creek on January 11
BATTLE CREEK – Funeral services were held Sunday for Otto Schumann Sr., at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Rev. O. H. A. Hoemann officiating. Otto Emil Schumann was the son of Ernest and Emilie Schumann. He was born in Taugwitz, Saxony on Sept. 6, 1865. Here he was baptized in the name of the Triune God and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith. After finishing his secular education Mr. Schumann became a brewer in Saxony. He also found his faithful wife in the person of Lina Laughammer, whom he married in 1889. In 1894, when the family numbered three children, Mr. and Mrs. Schumann decided to seek a new home in America. They located southeast of Battle Creek, later moving northwest of town and finally they lived on their farm north of Battle Creek. In 1931 the couple bought a home here in town and retired from the farm. Here death came suddenly to Mr. Schumann on Thursday, Jan 11 at the age of 74 years, 4 months and 5 days. His death is mourned by the bereaved widow, the sons, Otto, William, Carl and Robert, the daughters, Mrs. Lina Graham of California, Mrs. Antonie Brotzman of California, Mrs. Frances Hayward of Battle Creek, Mrs. Emile Albertsen of Battle Creek, Mrs. Emma Moltman of Battle Creek. There are 23 grandchildren, two great grandchildren, other relatives and friends. One brother, Ed Schumann of Omaha, came to attend the funeral, but became ill and was forced to enter the local hospital. Pall bearers were Hans Greenwald, Theo Greenwald, Ernest Burk, Wm. Ramm, Thomas Brodersen and Gus Ludwig, Fower committee, Mrs. E. H. Hargens and Mrs. Theo Greenwald. Christensen’s Funeral Home was in charge. Interment was made in Mr. Hope Cemetery.
