Rev. Curtis Edward Benson
(April 30, 1937 – August 6, 2020)

HOLSTEIN – Private family services for the Rev. Curtis E. Benson, 83, of Holstein were at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Holstein with the Rev. Bob Lewis officiating. Burial was in the Holstein Cemetery at Holstein with Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home in Holstein was in charge of arrangements.
He died Aug. 6, 2020, at UnityPoint Health-St. Luke's in Sioux City.
Curtis Edward Benson was born April 30, 1937, in Hartford, S.D., to Elmer and Nellie (Pearson) Benson. He graduated from Hartford High School and studied at Augustana College and Gustavus Adolphus. He earned a master of divinity degree from Rock Island Seminary.
He married Ivye Carlson May 4, 1969. To this union, three daughters were born. He married Marilyn (Anderson) Bayro Sept. 27, 1997. Pastor Benson spent 55 years as a minister in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, retiring in 2016 from St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Holstein. Even after retirement, he continued to use his gift of ministering the community of Holstein by visiting nursing homes and anyone in need. He also supported the ministerial fund for local pastors. Curtis died Aug. 6, 2020, at Unity Point Health-St. Luke's in Sioux City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Margie Pederson; two brothers-in-law, Lee Pederson and Randy Anderson; and his father-in-law, David Anderson. He is survived by his wife Marilyn of Holstein; three daughters: Lisa Humphrey and husband, Ron of Johnston, Laura Pfeufer and husband, Brian of Closter, N.J., and Debra Benson and Alex Norman of Santa Monica, Calif.; and a son, David Bayro of Seattle, Wash. Additional survivors include his sisters: Edna Haase and husband, Richard of Hartford, S.D., and Mabel DuPriest and husband, Travis of Racine, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.
