Leona R. Kossman
(January 21, 1920 – December 28, 2020)HOLSTEIN – Private family graveside services for Leona R. Kossman, 100, of Holstein, formerly of Indianola, were Dec. 31, 2020, at Galva Township West Cemetery in Galva, with the Rev. Paul D. Egger officiating. Burial was in the Galva Township West Cemetery. Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home in Holstein was in charge of arrangements. Leona “Tootie” Ruth (Heinje) Kossman was born Jan. 21, 1920, in Wilmot, S.D. She was one of five children born to John and Martha (Reil) Heinje. She was baptized at Christ Lutheran Church in Wilmot, S.D., and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Corona, S.D. She attended rural school in Lake Township. Leona owned and operated her own beauty shop in Sioux Falls, S.D., where she met her husband, Richard Kossman. They married Oct. 7, 1951. They were blessed with three daughters: Connie, Lynn and Cheryl. Leona worked as a nurses’ aide for 12 years at Good Samaritan in Indianola until she retired. In 2012, Leona moved to Holstein, to be near her grandkids and daughter. She died Dec. 28, 2020, at Cherokee Specialty Care in Cherokee.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Cheryl (Tom) Andresen of Holstein; three grandchildren: Nick Andresen of Climbing Hill, Ben (Christi) Andresen of Walnut Creek, Calif., and Victoria (Nick) Stromer and her great-grandson, Parker Thomas of Garner; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard; two daughters: Connie Thompson and Lynn VanderLinden; and four siblings: Elroy (Vivian) Heinje, Elnora (Carl) Palmquist, Adella McClelland and Earnest (Leoda) Heinje.
