Mrs. Ella Chaffee Expires Wednesday Morning at Home in Sioux City
News reached Ida Grove Wednesday of the death of Mrs. Ella C. Chaffee, widow of A. B. Chaffee, an early Ida Grove pioneer. Her death occurred at 4 a.m. that day after only a few days illness. Mrs. Chaffee and her husband located in the tiny village of Ida in 1874, coming here from Storm Lake. Mr. Chaffee bought a half interest in the newly established paper, the Ida County Pioneer, and for many years was associated with George T. Williams, in the publication of the county’s first newspaper. In 1897 Mrs. Chaffee opened a millinery store in the rear of the Rohwer store. She has been a resident of Sioux City for about twenty years. Mrs. Chaffee is survived by two children, Mrs. Cora Sandberg of Sioux City and George Chaffee of Chicago. She was a woman of considerable literary attainment, often contributing lovely verses to this newspaper and at one time, wrote a series of stories in rhyme dedicated to prominent personages of this town. The remains were brought to Ida Grove Wednesday and will be laid to rest in the local cemetery. The time of the funeral has not been announced.
