Funeral Services For Vern Hansen; Former Resident Fatally Hurt When Struck By Car August 18
Vern L. Hansen, son of Charles and Susan Nelson Hansen, was born October 6, 1920 at Ida Grove and died August 18, at Indian Head, Maryland, as a result of being struck by an automobile. The accident occurred as he was returning to the Barracks. Vern graduated from Ida Grove High School with the class of 1938. He enlisted with the Ambulance Company at Ida Grove in March 1938. On October 6, 1938 he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and after receiving his training at San Diego, California was transferred aboard the U.S.S. Maryland for duty, which departed for maneuvers in the Caribbean Sea. The first week in April 1939 he came home on a furlough, while being transferred by way of the Great Lakes Naval station to the Marine Base at Quantico, Va. In December 1939 he was promoted to the rank of assistant cook and has been an expert shot with the service rifle, Browning Automatic Rifle and the pistol. He had reached the age of 19 years, 10 months and 12 days. Surviving are the parents, one sister, Ruby of Chicago, and one brother, Lloyd of Fort Meade, S. D.
Funeral Wednesday
The remains were accompanied here by a military escort from the Marine Corps base. Military funeral services were held at Moore’s Funeral Home at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon with Rev. Wilbur F. Swan officiating. Burial was made in the Ida Grove cemetery. Mrs. E. A. Swanke sang, “No Night There” and “Good Night and Good Morning” with Mrs. Stanley J. Mead presiding at the piano. C. A. Van Griethuysen acted as chaplain. Pall bearers were C. Phelps, Charles Denison, Lee Thornburg, Earl Liming, John Collier and Fred Driver. The firing squad and color bearers were Leo Bekman, sergeant, Purl Moore, John Sievert, Kenneth Wood, J. T. Kearney, Ray Bresnahan, Walter Muller, Jens Graversen, Bruce Clark, Albert Bird, M. R. Crom, Andy Clark, Frank Howell and John Ehler.
