Aug. Horstman Sr. Expires Tuesday Evening.
August Horstman Sr one of the oldest residents of Ida Grove, passed away at 5 45 p. m Tuesday at the home of his son August H Horstman on South Main street. Death was due to dropsy of the heart and old age. Mr. Horstman was aged 89 years, 2 months and 2 days. The body will be taken Thursday to Wheatland, Iowa, for burial on Friday of this week
Mr. Horstman was born in Sarau province, Schleswig-Holstein. Germany January 28. 1831, and came from Germany to Lowden, Iowa, in the fall of 1872, renting a farm which he occupied until the spring of 1884 when he moved to a 320 acre farm south of Battle Creek, having purchased this farm in 1882 he improved it and remained on it until the fall of 1897 when he retired and moved to Ida Grove, making his residence here until the time of his death
Mr. Horstman was married in Germany to Christina Ochs in 1852 She died in 1894 To this union were born four children. Ferdinand D. Horstman of Davenport, August H Horstman of Ida Grove, and Edward F. Horstman of Chicago Theodore died in infancy. There are nine grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren
Mr. Horstman was brought up in the Lutheran faith. He will tie missed in Ida Grove, his cheery smile and kindly word of greeting being known to most all of the residents. He lived a life of industry. thrift and square dealing and in his late years he took great comfort in garden and grounds which he looked after with painstaking care.
