Obituary – Caroline Hanson Cope
Caroline Hanson Cope was born on March 8, 1868 at Copenhagen, Denmark, and died on Monday, July 30, 1951 at 6:30 a.m. at the home of her daughter in Seymour, Indiana. She had attained the age of 83 years, 4 months, and 22 days.
The earliest years of her life were spent with her people in Denmark. However, at the age of five she came to America to live with her aunt, Mrs. Peter Jacobsen, in Grundy County, Iowa. There she received her education in the rural schools, and there she grew to young womanhood. In October of 1886, she was united in marriage with Ira Warren cope of Battle Creek. To this union were born nine children: Mrs. Etta Urban of Ida Grove, Mrs. Amy Morrison of Maywood, Calif.; Ira Philip Cope, Hanover, Ill.; John Cope, Ida Grove; Ralph Cope, Sioux City; Nora Cope, Long Island, New York; Mrs. Vera LaVonne Gray, Seymour, Ind.; Mrs. Lena Bloomberg, Moline, Ill. and Roy S. Cope, whose address is unknown.
For some years Mr. and Mrs. Cope lived on a farm near Battle Creek. Later, however, they moved to Ida Grove, where Mr. Cope did custom farm work and was employed as a teamster. Mrs. Cope loved her family, and no sacrifice was too great to make for them. She believed in the Bible and tried to see that her children were in church and Sunday school. She also loved her flowers, and her garden was one of the finest in the neighborhood. She also had a tender place in her heart for the sick and afflicted, and for some thirty years, she was employed at the Ida Grove municipal hospital. She will always be remembered for her good-heartedness to others, her industriousness for whatever job she undertook, and her absolute spirit of unselfishness, where others were concerned.
She leaves to mourn her passing; nine children; Mrs. Etta Urban of Ida Grove, Mrs. Amy Morrison, Maywood, Calif., Ira Philip Cope, Hanover, Ill.; John Cope, Ida Grove, Ralph Cope, Sioux City; Nora Cope, Long Island, New York; Mrs. Vera LaVonne Gray, Seymour, Ind., Mrs. Lena Bloomberg, Moline, Ill.; and Roy S. Cope, address unknown, twenty three grandchildren, many great grand-children.
Funeral services were held at Moore & Christensen funeral home on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m., and Rev. Arthur C. Marston, pastor of Winebrenner church of God officiating. John King sang “I Won’t Have to Cross Jordan Alone,” and “The Old Rugged Cross,” accompanied by Mrs. Darrell Wellendorf. Burial was in the Ida Grove cemetery. Pall bearers were Charles Christie, Ward Luscombe, Jas. Krick, Theodore Murphy.
