Thomas J. Monroe, age 70, of Ida Grove, Iowa, died Tuesday, November 13, 2012, at Odebolt Nursing & Rehab Center in Odebolt.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 17, 2012, at Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Ida Grove, Iowa. Visitation will be held on Saturday one hour prior to services.

Born January 3, 1942, in Odebolt, Iowa, Thomas John Monroe was the son of Forrest Wayne Monroe and Gladys Hausman. He grew up and received his education in Odebolt.

On April 17, 1964, Tom was united in marriage to Marilyn Kay Ling. The couple made their home in Valparaiso, Indiana, and was blessed with six children, Toni, Troy, Lisa, John, Julie, and Wayne. Tom worked as a plumber while in Indiana, and returned to Iowa in 1983. He worked in maintenance at Morningside Rehab & Care Center in Ida Grove, and later at Midwest Industries, until his retirement.

Tom enjoyed fishing, camping, playing darts and cards, and watching old western movies. He especially enjoyed nature and being outdoors.

Survivors include six children: Toni Monroe of Ida Grove, Troy Monroe of Indiana, Lisa (Allen) Doely of Spring Grove, MN, and John Monroe, Julie (Gerrod) Sholty, and Wayne Monroe and fiance Renae Fassler, all of Ida Grove; 23 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. Other survivors include three brothers, Jerry Monroe of Las Vegas, NV, Marvin Monroe of Sioux City, and Brian Monroe, of Las Vegas, NV; four sisters: Mavis (Phillip) Hast of Ida Grove, Shirley (Pete) Pedersen of Deming, NM, Sandy (Dale) Ullrich of Arthur, and Patty (Terry) Kvasager of Plummer, MN; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1998; his parents; a grandson, Dustin Drum; and two brothers, Don and Jim Monroe.
