LaVone I. McDonald, 89, of Kingsley, died at the Holstein Good Samaritan Center Nursing Home in Holstein, Iowa, Thursday, November 27, 2008. Funeral services will be held at 10:30a.m., Monday, December 1, 2008, at Rohde Funeral Home in Kingsley, Iowa with Pastor Roger Kurtenbach of the United Methodist Church in Kingsley, Iowa, officiating. Burial will be at Kingsley Cemetery. Visitation begins after 2:00 p.m. Sunday, with the family present 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:00 p.m., all at the Rohde Funeral Home.
LaVone Inez Johnson was born May 1, 1919 at Page, Nebraska, the daughter of Frank and Dora (Eick) Johnson. As a young child Lavone's family moved to Belden, Nebraska, where she graduated from high school. After graduating from high school she went to college to become a teacher. She married Lloyd McDonald January 17, 1941, in South Sioux City, Nebraska, while Lloyd was serving in the U.S. Army during WWII. After Lloyd was honorably discharged from the Army he and LaVone bought and operated a grocery store and meat locker in Belden, Nebraska. Also, while living in Belden, LaVone taught country school between Belden and Laurel, Nebraska. In 1958 they moved to Kingsley, Iowa, where they owned and operated McDonald's Locker until their retirement. After retirement they continued living in Kingsley where they were close to their family.
Survivors include three daughters, Judy and Tom Bainbridge of Holstein, Iowa, Jill and Loy Bakken of Sioux City, Iowa, and Jaine and Denis Stubbs of Moville, Iowa, and one son, Jerry and Cheryl McDonald of Aurora, Colorado. LaVone is survived by five grandchildren, Tracy Bainbridge of Holstein, Iowa, Timi Wunschel and her husband, Roger of Ida Grove, Iowa, Blake Stubbs of Moville, Iowa, Lacey Stubbs of Phoenix, Arizona, and Donna McDonald of Aurora, Colorado, and three great grandchildren, Nickalaus, Keller and Wyatt Wanschel.
LaVone was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Lloyd, grandson, Tate and great grandson, Seth.
