Lorn R. Harrison, 71, of Braunfels, Germany and formerly of Washta, Iowa, died Saturday, May 16, 2009, in Wetzlar, Germany following a courageous battle with cancer.

Lorn Roy Harrison was born Oct. 9, 1937, on the family farm in Douglas Township, Ida County, Iowa (rural Washta) the son of LeRoy and Ona (Godwin) Harrison. He attended country school near his home and later went to school in Washta. Following his education, Lorn worked on a farm for Vernon Dau and also at Armburg Motors.

Lorn began his longtime career with the United States Army when he enlisted June 18, 1956. He first served overseas during the last years of the Korean War. After that tour of duty he returned stateside before being assigned to Germany in 1964. Lorn again answered the call of his country and served in Vietnam for two years. He would return to Germany to finish his career with the active service. Lorn attained the rank of Staff Sergeant prior to earning his honorable discharge Jan. 31, 1976. After retiring from the Army, Lorn took a position with "Stars and Stripes," the Armed Forces newspaper.

In Lorn's early years he enjoyed the outdoors and spent a great deal of time fishing, hunting and camping. He also liked fast cars. While in Germany Lorn met his lifetime companion Uschi. Together they spent many hours working on Lorn's hobby farm ranch and they also cared for abandoned animals.

He will be lovingly remembered by his lifetime companion Uschi Kolodziej of Braunsfels, Germany; a daughter Eimi Paulk and her husband Danny of Valdosta, Ga.; a son Roy Harrison and his wife Diana of Frankfurt, Germany; sisters Lorraine Adams and her husband Marlin of Le Mars and Melva Dickman and her husband Virgil of Coon Rapids; a sister-in-law, Cheryl Harrison of Correctionville; grandchildren Nicole Lee and her husband Cliff of Lakeland, Ga., Lacee Paulk of Valdosta, Ga., and Dominik Harrison of Frankfurt, Germany; great-grandchildren Dawson Lee and Carter Paulk; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Leon; and a sister and her husband Frances and Earl Schwaller.

A graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 18 at the Correctionville Cemetery followed by military honors performed by the Sioux Valley Post # 1750 of the VFW and the Mumford-Moon Post #79 of the American Legion. Chaplain Merle Mueller of the 185th Air Guard in Sioux City will officiate. Friends and family may gather at 10:15 a.m. Thursday at the Grace United Methodist Church parking lot to process to the cemetery. A time of lunch and fellowship will follow at Grace United Methodist Church in Correctionville.
