Fountain Hart Trainer
born Mar 22, 1845, West Virginia

F. H. Trainer, another intelligent and enterprising farmer of Battle Township, resides on a farm of 160 acres in section 14. He was born in West Virginia, on March 22, 1845, son of Rev. T. H. and Jame (Hart) Trainer, both natives of the Old Dominion, the founder of Irish descent and the latter English. His parents both died in West Virginia, his mother at the age of fifty-five and father at sixty-seven. For forty years, Rev. Trainer was an active minister in the Methodist Church and was the means of accomplishing much good for the Master. He and his wife had thirteen children, five sons and eight daughters, F. H. being the sixth born. F. H. was reared in his native state, receiving his education in the various towns his father was stationed. At the age of seventeen, he came West as far as Peoria, Illinois, where he remained one year from there and then came to DeWitt, Clinton County, Iowa. His next move was to Shellsburg, Benton County, Iowa, where he was engaged in the drug business three years. He then returned to Clinton County at the end of that time and was employed there until 1881, when he located on 160 acres, where he now lives. His farm is one of the best in Battle Township. His cottage home is 26 x 31 feet, and located on a natural building site, and is surrounded by a beautiful grove and orchard. He has barns, stables, cribs, granaries, feed lots, etc. A modern windmill supplies the motor power for conducting water into pipes and carrying it to the residence, barns and feed lots. He gives his attention to farming and stock-raising. He married at age twenty-five in Clinton County to Addie Cross, one of Clinton’s most popular and successful teachers. She is the daughter of B. J. and Cabrina Cross, born in New York State. Mr. and Mrs. Trainer have three children: Mabel, Ruby and Jean. Politically, he is a Republican and has served as Township Trustee and a member of the School Board. They are members of the Congregational Church.
