John Lowe
(1820 – February 2, 1898)Obituary
John Lowe, a resident of Des Moines for many years, better known as Uncle John Lowe, died at Gilmore City, February 2, 1898. John Lowe was born in England in 1820, so was in his 78th year. He came to the city of Des Moines in 1863 and was employed by the Rock Island R. R. Co., and for many years was night watchman for them. While thus employed, his wife died, leaving 3 grown children, one son and two daughters. In 1891 he married his second wife, Margaret Crick, who now mourns his loss. He moved from Des Moines to Gilmore city onto a forty acre farm that he bought of said R. R. Co. to spend the evening of his life. Being very fond of hunting and the country being new, he was known and loved as uncle John Lowe. He was strictly an honorable man though not a professed Christian until about July 1st when he sought and found the Savior and his faith sustained him to the last. He was stricken with paralysis on the 17th of May 1897, and was a great sufferer until the end came. He calmly made arrangements for his funeral, then calling his wife, said, as he took her by the hand, going, going, good bye! Rev. Dodge & Gibson conducted the funeral services.
