Fern McManus
(February 13, 1896 – November 13, 1896)

Obituary
The Over Shepherd of life’s flock had entered another home and has taken in his own arms a lamb for the upper fold. Fern, infant daughter of Dr. and Mrs. F. W. McManus, was born February 13, 1896. Died at their former home, Gilmore City, Iowa, Friday morning, Nov. 13, 1896, aged 9 months. Little Fern’s illness was brief, and her death, which was caused by spasms brought on by teething, was a surprise to many friends. The funeral services were conducted at the home of Mr. and Mrs. VanSteenburg, by the writer, at 10 o’clock Sunday morning. A host of friends were present, whose hearts go out to the bereaved mother and father, who mourn the death of their little child. But in the midst of sadness there comes the assurance that the hearts love and hope will not be lost. The Good Shepherd has taken the lamb from the storms, from the dangers of earth-life to the better land into whose habitations we shall all enter, in the fullness of time. E. A. Cantrell
“The Lord Gave, and the Lord Hath Taken Away.” (Written by Mrs. A. A. P.)
Thou art gone – Little Fern, Fairest Blossom. How short was they earthly stay; but the Lord in his infinite wisdom, hath given and taken away. It seems like a spring time flower that gladdened our home but a day; yet the Lord in his wonderful wisdom, hath given and taken away. Oh why didst though leave us so quickly when our hearts were pleading, stay! Yet God in his infinite wisdom hath given and taken away. Our hearts seem breaking with anguish, as we gaze on our beautiful day; and wonder why God in his wisdom, hath given and taken away. We mourn – but we’ll know over yonder, when the mists have all cleared away; why God in his love and compassion, hath taken our darling away.
