Death of Mrs. Daniel Ray

After many weeks of suffering Mrs. Daniel Ray died at her home in this city on Monday night, April 30, 1900, at 12 o'clock.

Mrs. Ray was born in Stuben [Steuben] county, New York, in 1835. She moved to Cattarauguss [Cattaraugus] county, New York, in 1840, and in 1855 to Lafayette county, Wis.

Her maiden name was Nancy Melvina Franklin, and she was married to Daniel Ray in Avoca, Wis., in 1857. In 1866 she came to Humboldt county, Ia., settlinmg on a farm on the east side of the river; several years later she occupied the farm known as Oak Lawn, where Geo. Hart now resides; from there she removed to the residence where her death occurred.

The following children were born to them: Robert and Hattie, both deceased, buried in Wisconsin; Lettie [Mrs. VanNatta], buried in Dakota City; Mrs. Henry [Cora Ann] Tucker, residing in Livermore; Fred R., at Castlewood, S. D.; Mrs. Maggie Bandy, Eagle Grove; Charles, Eagle Grove; Francis [Frances], Livermore; Mrs. [Susie] Dillon, Castlewood; Allen, Eagle Grove.

These, and the husband, were all present at the funeral with the exception of Mrs. Dillon and Fred.

There were also present at the funeral Frank Allen and wife, Allen Ray, and Blanche Gripman, all of Burt.

Mrs. Ray has been practically an invalid for the past fifteen years. She was a woman of a kind, social disposition, and when her bodily sufferings were not too great she loved to mingle with her neighbors, and was a favorite with the old settlers at their yearly gatherings. She was a good wife and mother and tried always to do her duty by her husband and children; and the care which she has received at their hands in her declining years indicated that her efforts had not been wasted.

The funeral occurred at the house last Wednesday morning, Rev. Berry of the Presbyterian church officiating, and she was buried in the family plot at Dakota City.
