Lillie Underberg Benge 1919 - 2003

Lillie Benge, 84, of Bradgate, died Sunday, June 8, 2003, at the Humboldt Community Hospital, Humboldt. Services were held at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 11, at First Lutheran Church, Gilmore City, with the Rev. Ray Block officiating. Burial was in Marble Valley Cemetery, Gilmore City. Harris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Lillie, daughter of Carl and Etta (Hanson) Underberg, was born Jan. 18, 1919, in rural Bode. She grew up in the Bode and Livermore area, attending schools there. On Aug. 8, 1937, Lillie was united in marriage with Dwayne Benge at her parents' home near Livermore.
The couple farmed for 35 years in the Bradgate area. They then moved into Bradgate, where Lillie worked as a cook for the Bradgate and Gilmore City schools and operated the Bradgate Coffee Shop. She lived in Humboldt the past six years.
Lillie was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Gilmore City, the Rachael Circle and WELCA. She was previously a member of the United Methodist Church in Bradgate and charger member of the UMW.
Lillie was a volunteer worker for the Iowa Department of Human Services in Humboldt County for many years. She enjoyed playing cards, ballroom dancing, cooking, having coffee with friends and spending time with her grandchildren.
Lillie was preceded in death by her husband, Dwayne; brothers, George and Ted Underberg; and sisters, Marie Olson and Alpha Noonan.
Survivors include Lillie's three children: Thomas (and Sharon) Benge of Rolfe, Roxanne Garrett of Cedar Rapids, and Katherine (and Michael) DeWolf of Rolfe; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Irwin (and Betty) Underberg of Eagle Grove, Joe (and Donna) Underberg of Fort Dodge, and Kenneth (and Jeanette) Underberg of Livermore; as well as sisters, Iola Foley of Humboldt and Helen (and Bob) Pfaff of Evanston, Ill.
