Dorothy L. Kohlhaas, 77, died Tuesday, April 9 2002, in the Kossuth Regional Health Center at Algona.
Funeral Mass for her was celebrated by Father Paul Eisele at 10:30 a.m. Friday in St. Joseph Catholic Church at St. Joe. Burial was in the parish cemetery with the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home of Algona in charge of arrangements.
Honorary bearers were Seth, Carolyn, Maria, Kelly, Darci and Angela Kohlhaas; Whitney, Ernst S., Kevin and Elyzabeth Coriolan; Ronda Reeves and Melody Ridout.
Casket bearers were Kyle, Jeremy, Jake, John, Josh and Chris Kohlhaas, Ernst Coriolan and Ryan Ridout.
Dorothy L. Gisch, daughter of Lorenz and Eva Lentsch Gisch, was born April 12, 1924, at Burt, IA. She was raised on a farm northwest of Algona and attended school, graduating from St. Cecelia Academy at Algona. After she received her education, Dorothy worked at the S & L Department Store in Algona.
She was married to Wilfred Kohlhaas April 22, 1947, in St. Cecelia Catholic Church at Algona. Following their marriage, the couple moved to their present farm where they have since lived. Wilfred died November 27, 2000.
Dorothy was an active member of St. Joseph parish as a lector, eucharistic minister and choir member. She was a charter member of the CD of A, active in the Cursillo Movement, helped with the RCIA program and was also a member of the People of Praise prayer group. She enjoyed spending time with her family and hosting Grandma's Day once a week as her grandchildren were growing up. Dorothy was a past 4-H leader for the Riverdale Rustlers, she cooked at the Grotto and was a past member of the Twin Rivers Saddle Club.
Dorothy Kohlhaas is survived by her children and spouses, Ron and Linda Kohlhaas, Macedonia, IL; Dwight and Iris Kohlhaas, Livermore; Daryl and Kathy Kohlhaas, Algona; Harley and Anne Kohlhaas, Algona; Theresa Kohlhaas, Pella; Carol and Ernst Cariolan, Worthington, MN; Mary Kohlhaas, Stillwater, MN; and Paul and Sasha Kohlhaas, San Jose, CA. She has 18 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are two sisters, Ruth Arend of Algona and Rachel Hamilton, Bancroft. Her husband, parents, brothers and sisters, John Gisch, Mary Lichter, Larry Gisch, Fern Specht and Barney Gisch preceded her in death.
