Raymond John McKenna, 89, of Algona, died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001 in the Kossuth Regional Health Center at Algona.
Funeral Mass for him was held Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001 at 2 p.m. in the St. Cecelia Catholic Church at Algona with Father Stephen Brodersen the celebrant. Interment was in the Calvary Cemetery at Algona, the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home of Algona in charge of arrangements.
Casketbearers were Tom Arndorfer, Jack Lichter, Tim McKenna, Wayne Arndorfer, James McKenna and Donald Prilipp.
Raymond John McKenna was born April 25, 1912 at Hardy, the son of Edward and Ida Baessler McKenna. He attended country schools near Hardy and graduated from the Livermore High School. Ray worked as a farm hand and then entered the United States Navy where he served as a Chief Torpedo Man for 20 years retiring in 1956.
Ray was married to Mary Ann Arndorfer June 21, 1943 at St. Benedict. He and his family moved to San Diego where he worked for Convair Aircraft Manufacturing for three years, and then worked as a civil servant at the North Island Naval Air Station for 16 years. In 1990, he and his wife moved to Algona. Ray enjoyed golfing, walking, gardening, and wintering in Arizona; loved spending time with his granddaughters; and was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association and St. Cecelia's Catholic Church at Algona.
Survivors are his wife, Mary Ann McKenna of Algona; a son, David McKenna, and wife, Vicki, St. Paul, MN; three grandchildren; two sisters, Doris Gardner, Davenport and Jeanne, Mrs. Robert Jamieson of Clear Lake; brothers, Donald McKenna, Spokane, WA and Charles McKenna of Ankeny; nieces and nephews.Preceding him in death were his parents, and brothers, Francis and Robert McKenna.
