Herbert Raney, 88, died Sept. 24 2001, in the Shady Oaks Care Center at Lake City.
Funeral service for him is at 1 p.m. today (Thursday) in the United Methodist Church at Livermore, the Rev. Dale Reisner officiating. Burial is in Union Cemetery, the Harris Funeral Home of Livermore in charge of arrangements.
Herbert C. Raney, son of Charles and Leila Clark Raney, was born Oct. 11, 1912, at Livermore where he was raised and graduated from Livermore High School in 1932. He attended and graduated from Upper Iowa University, then taught math and science and coached boys basketball and baseball for one year before he became acting principal at Manly.
Herbert was married to Virginia Sargeant at Des Moines on Dec. 24, 1938. After their marriage, they lived in the Bode and Livermore area. He returned to teaching junior high math and social studies in the Twin River Valley system for eleven years and after retiring, he worked for the DeKalb Seed Company at Humboldt. They later became residents of the Sunny View Retirement Home at Rockwell City.
Herb was a 50-year member of the United Methodist Church at Livermore where he taught a teenage Sunday School class, sang in the choir, served as lay leader and was a delegate to the annual conference three times. He was very active in Masonry, served as Worshipful Master in 1944-45 and 1954 and acting secretary when Jasper Lodge No. 424 at Livermore affiliated with Eastern Star Lodge No. 195 at Humboldt.
He was a board member of the Friends and Neighbors Club at Livermore and served as a representative to Bode, Humboldt and Renwick Elderbridge meetings. Herb celebrated 50 years in the Masonry in 1992.
Mrs. Raney died in 1999 and he is survived by four children; Judith Ann Terpenning and Barbara Jean Shively, Sioux City; Ronald Robert Raney, Grimes and Cynthia Jane Donahue of Cedar Rapids. There are 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his wife, parents, brothers, Ernest, Evered, Guy and Hugh and sisters, Maude Barrett, Beth Olson and Faith Ross.
