Funeral service for Katherine Nygaard Smith, 88, was conducted by the Rev. Dan Fernandez at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 23, in the United Methodist Church at Livermore. Burial was in Union Cemetery with the Wilson Funeral Home of Livermore in charge of arrangements.
Casket bearers were Benjamin Jennings, Ross Jennings, Carl Franzen, Marty Kelchen, Ed Nygaard, Chris Nygaard and Todd Nygaard.
Katherine, daughter of Christian and Lizzie Roalstad Nygaard, was born November 18, 1915, at Badger, IA. She attended school at LuVerne.
Katherine was married to Virgil V. Smith at LuVerne on October 12, 1940. The Smiths lived at Livermore where she later owned and operated the Trading Post until 1982.
Katherine worked at the polls during elections. She was a member of the United Methodist Church where she was active in United Methodist Women. With her husband, she was active in the Livermore Lions Club projects and activities. She loved spending time with her family and enjoyed having coffee with neighbors. Katherine also liked to play cards, read and bake.
Katherine Smith died Tuesday, January 20 (2004), in the Mercy Hospice Center at Johnston, IA. Her husband died in 1981.
She is survived by a son and daughter, Norman and Patricia Smith, Cedar Falls, Rita and Paul Jennings of Des Moines. She has five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Other survivors include two brothers and two sisters, Berdine and Mabel Nygaard, Bode; Roy Nygaard, Humboldt; Mabel Nelson, Des Moines and Hazel VanVoorhis, Pryor, OK. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and two brothers, Charles and Luther Nygaard.
