Henry J. Preble
Henry J. Preble was born of sturdy puritan ancestors at Norridgewock Main, September 27, 1835. After living with his parents in Maine and Massachusetts, while still in boyhood he moved with them to Cleveland, Ohio, where he remained until a man of twenty-five years. In 1860 he came to Iowa locating at LaPorte City. In the following year he enlisted in the Union army, his first period of service continuing until December 1863 when he was discharged but immediately re-enlisted. He first served as a Hospital Steward but after his second enlistment he was Quartermaster Sargeant in the Third Iowa battery and continued in service until October 1865.

January 1, 1866, he was married to Emma Jane Heath at LaPorte City, Iowa. He was engaged in the mercantile business at that place for a number of years, after which he resided for a time at Cedar Falls, Iowa, and from thence moved to Humboldt in October 1881. He here engaged with the mercantile firm of Ray and Adams and later was for eight years employed in the general store of G.B. White. He subsequently for several years conducted a store for himself from which he was forced by ill health to retire. …. He passed away quietly, peacefully in the forenoon of May 17, 1915. He is at rest. There survive him, the wife of nearly half a century, three daughters, Mrs. A. E. Ruse, Misses Margaret E. and Kate B. and two sons, Charles H. and Edgar C., all well-known and highly regarded in Humboldt, two of the daughters being in county office, Margaret as recorder and Kate as deputy auditor. He also leaves two sisters and one brother.

The funeral service was held at the home on Wednesday at two PM Reverend G. H. Zastrow of the Unitarian church officiating. The two sons, son-in-law, A. E. Ruse, and three of the grandsons served as pall bearers. A profusion of floral offerings showed the thought of many friends. The burial service of the G.A.R. Post was used at the interment in Union Cemetery , the members of that order attending in a body.

[There follows a long discourse on the wonderful qualities of of Mr. Preble by G. S. Garfield]
