Levi Goodell was born in Fulton County, Illinois, June 22, 1840 and passed on to his heavenly reward from Humboldt, Iowa, on last Wednesday afternoon, September 26, 1923. He had arrived at the mature age of 83 years, 3 months and 4 days.As a young man at the age of twenty-one he engaged in the great struggle of the Civil War, enlisting in Co. D, 55th Illinois Inf. He served in a number of important battles, including Shiloh, Chattanooga and Chickamauga. He was among those who marched with Sherman in his famous march to the sea. At the close of the war he took part in the Grand Review at Washington.
At the conclusion of the war, returning to his home in Illinois, he was shortly married to Miss Sarah A. Fielding, who through the years has walked by his side, shared all the experiences that fifty-eight years of married life have brought and has ever been a faithful companion and helpmate. Their home was the birthplace of six children, three boys and three girls. One child died in infancy and another, a daughter, Mrs. Ivy Hayden, passed away in the year 1916. The remaining children are Mrs. Edith M. Phleger of Rutland, Archie L. of Humboldt, Otis Ray of Rutland, and Mrs. Pearl Rowe, of Rolfe. He leaves besides his faithful wife and the above mentioned children, nineteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grand-children and other relatives.
A short time after marriage Mr and Mrs. Goodell moved to Mansfield, Ill where they resided for a period of thirty-one years. Twenty-four years ago they came to Humboldt county and have since made this vicinity their home.
Brother Goodell was the last of a family of eleven children and he the youngest. His removal at this time from among us will be the cause of sincere regret, and brings to its close a life of usefulness and honor.
Not long after the close of the war, Brother Goodell was converted and united with the Christian church to which faith he was faithful throughout life. In the earlier years he held many important offices in the church and for a number of years served as trustee of the denominational school, Palmer College at LaGrand, Iowa.
During his last days the expressions of his faith in Christ and his resignation to the Divine will were clear and beautiful. His life has been long and useful. The future will be brighter and better than all.
Funeral services were held from the Methodist church conducted by the pastor Rev. Thos. B. Collins on last Friday afternoon at two o'clock, and the body of the weary pilgrim was laid to rest in beautiful Union Cemetery. The Sons of Veterans were the pallbearers.
