William Maxwell Guy was born in Peoria, Wyoming county, New York, July 23, 1840, and died December 16, 1900. He was the only child of James and Mary Gay, who lived to manhood. His father died when he was fourteen years old, leaving him to care for his mother, who lived with
him until her death, March 6, 1897. He came to Iowa in the spring of 1866 and took a homestead in Hnmboldt county. He chose as a life companion Miss Margaret Noble, to whom he was married Dec, 28, 1868. Mr. and Mrs Gay were among the earliest and most respected pioneers of this county. Three children were born to them, all of whom are living. Mrs. Ella Flemming, Frank and Winnie. On September 25, 1862, he enlisted in Company E, New York Volunteer Infantry. He was a good soldier and patiently discharged his duties of the army life. He served in the army of the Potomac for nearly three years, being discharged with honor June 13, 1865 He was a charter member in the Post in this place and held in the highest esteem
by all his comrades. He was a member of the Humboldt band for over twenty-five years, he was a very valuable member and arranged and transposed music for the band and also composed a few selections. Since giving up his position as a regular member of the band he has always played with it on special occasions. He was quiet and unobtrusive, yet missed when he was gone. As a man he was conscientious, truthful and respectfully reliable. All who knew him respected, trusted and loved him. He was reserved in manner but true to his convictions of right and duty. His life spoke more by action than by word and it is said that he had not an enemy in the world. He had been a member of the Congregational church of this place for six years and gave his heart and soul to the Master and was a worthy follower of Him of whom it was said, "He went about doing good.”
