A RESIDENT OF HUMBOLDT COUNTY 50 YEARSMrs. Sarah Hewitt died at her home in Livermore on Friday, October 26, 1906, at the age of 76 years, 1 month, and 14 days. Mrs. Hewitt's maiden name was Sarah Gates. She was born Sept. 6, 1830, in New York state, and was married to J. W. Hewitt on Aug. 12, 1845. She removed with her husband to Wisconsin in 1855, coming to Humboldt County in 1856, making her home on a 40-acre farm near St. Joe, which was later a portion of the Ingert farm. Their residence there was Lott's Creek Post Office, before there was any town here. Her husband died 12 years ago. She was the mother of ten children, as follows: Amos A., Roswell M. (better knows as Richard, now of Oregon), Emma G. (Mrs. E. E. Clark), Charles N., James E. (deceased), Loren A., Cyrilla F. (Mrs. Selmer Holmes), Elmer J., Ella A. (deceased), and Hiram I. There was also a son who died in infancy. She leaves eight children, 31 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Hewitt was a woman who experienced all the hardships of pioneer life, through it all, was a good wife and mother, as her grown children will testify. The funeral occurred at the Presbyterian Church on Saturday afternoon, Rev. Stewart conducting the services, assisted by Rev. Cuthbert of the Methodist Church, the house being well filled with many relatives and friends, and the deceased was laid to rest by her husband in Union Cemetery.
