"Uncle" George Schofield

I was browsing through the history of Howard County, and noticed one of my ancestors, George Schofield, was called "Uncle"
He built the first house in New Oregon, was a director of the "Howard County Sentinel" and when there were votes, apparently his house was one of the voting places.
I'm intrested in why he was called "Uncle" if anyone knows, or could point me in the right direction?
