SINGULAR AND FATAL ACCIDENT
On Tuesday evening last, C. J. Taylor was found dead in front of the residence of his brother-in-law, Wm. Ballard, in New Oregon village, under strange circumstances. Mr. Taylor had been to Chester during the day, from whence he returned through Cresco about 6 o'clock p.m., riding alone on a lumber wagon on which there was a bottom board but no other part of the box. About 7 o'clock his team stopped in front of Mr. Ballard's house, when the mangled and dead body of Mr. Taylor was found lying on that portion of the wagon tongue between the boister and whiffletrees. It is conjectured that he was either kicked by the team, or that he had slipped and fallen between the wheel and boister-stake and thus drawn around and thrown in front. On the inside the spokes were brushed clean of dirt and spattered with blood, which leads to the opinion that the latter conjecture is the more probable one. It is a very strange and distressing accident. The deceased was 65 years old; a respected citizen.
