Evelyn “Evie” Rose Hron was born on February 26, 1932, near Lourdes, IA, daughter of James and Rose (Pisney) Hron. Evie attended country school Paris #8 for 8 years near Schley. Ironically, her teacher was her older sister Helen. At the age of 15, Evie moved to Cresco by herself to attend Notre Dame High School. She worked at the Cresco Café and then St. Joseph Mercy Hospital to pay for her room and board while attending high school. In the Spring of 1952, Evelyn graduated from Notre Dame High School. On October 15, 1952, Evie married Gerald “Jay” Courtney at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Lourdes, Iowa. They made their home on a farm 1 mile from Cresco. To this union 3 children were born Timothy, Danny, and Judy. On September 1, 1965, Jay died from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. Being the resilient woman that Evie was, she decided to stay on the farm with her children. A few years after Jay’s accident Evie met then married Thomas Andresen on August 16, 1969 at Assumption Catholic Church, Cresco. They decided to expand the farming operation at Evie's farm by producing crops again and milking dairy cows. They were known for their registered Holstein cows and the awards they won and were awarded Howard County Distinguished Dairy Family of the Year. After marrying Tom not only did Evie work on their farm but she also held various part time jobs in Cresco. Evie worked for several years at Sears then as a deli cook at Jack & Jill. Evie’s delicious deli items became well known and sold out quickly in the store.

Evie was an active member at Assumption Catholic Church and Notre Dame Parish. Evie had a very strong faith in our Lord, praying daily, reciting the rosary every day as well as attending mass every Sunday. She was a Rosary Society leader, Circle leader for funeral meals, was a church board member and Notre Dame School board member. She also volunteered many hours counting money for the different church fundraisers as well as counting money Sunday’s after mass. She could always be depended on for a donation of baked goods or salads for many church events. Evie enjoyed being a member of the Farm Bureau Women’s Club, American Legion Auxiliary, Hospital Auxiliary, and Red Hat Society. She spent many years on the Howard County Dairy Council and was a 4-H Leader.

Evie will be remembered as a wonderful Mother and cook. She was famous for her potato salad, rhubarb dessert, cinnamon rolls, donuts, cookies, and roast beef. She planted a garden, canned her harvest, and shared it with family and friends. Evie also enjoyed being outside tending to her flower gardens.

Evelyn was an incredible example of someone who lived by faith, hard work, and compassion. She took care of so many people during her lifetime. Evie cared for her parents, siblings, friends, and tried to keep up with her two sons’ shenanigans. During the Christmas season, Evie always took a Christmas decoration and baked goods to her family and friends who were in the nursing homes. If she noticed someone was without in the care center during the Christmas season, she would be sure they had something also. It was very important to her that every one of her immediate family members could be present for holidays throughout the year, so she went to great lengths to arrange a date that worked for everyone.

Evelyn is survived by her son Timothy Courtney of Cresco, IA; daughter Judy (Eric) Thorson of Waterloo, IA; daughter-in-law Tammy Courtney; grandson Cody (Danielle) Courtney of Cresco, their children Brinley, Kaden, Ryker, Taelyn; grandson Cyle (Adrianne) Courtney of Cresco, their children Carter, Chloe, and Cash; granddaughter Cari (Evan) Carman of Cresco, their children Mason, Blake, Maverick, Max; granddaughter Cheyann (Jett) Rodenz of Ridgeway, their children Rowen and Elowen; granddaughter Angela Courtney (Andy Stapelkamp), their son Brecken; and granddaughter Danielle (Nathan) Leas, their son Jace; her sister Wilma (Dick) Makinster of Marion, IA; Courtney in-laws Dolores Courtney, Louise Nichols, and Louis (Patricia) Courtney; and brother-in-law Bill Andresen.
