Demise of Allan D. Shackleton.
Cresco friends of Julia Kessel Shackleton were deeply grieved to learn that her husband, Lieut. Allan D. Shackleton, had made the supreme sacrifice; his demise occurring at Kelly Field No. 1, San Antonio, Texas, the result of influenza followed by pneumonia.
Allan D. Shackleton was married on December 27, 1916, to Julia Brainerd Kessel at the Kessel home in Cresco; the young couple leaving immediately for their new home in Philadelphia where Mr. Shackleton’s business interests were, he being the manager of the Philadelphia office of the Fidelity & Casualty Co., of New York, a position which he held for four years. Impelled by his Country’s need, Mr. Shackleton in December 1917, gave up his position to enlist in the Aviation Corps, receiving his officer’s training at the School of Military Aeronautics at Atlanta, Georgia, where he was commissioned Lieutenant in the aviation section, Signal Reserve Corps, on March 15, 1918. Lieut. Shackleton’s first detail was at Rockwell Field, San Diego, California, he being sent from there to Mather Field, Sacramento, California, where he remained for about six months. He was then transferred to Kelly Field No. 1, San Antonio, Texas, where his illness and death occurred.
The remains of Lieut. Shackleton were brought to Cresco on December 24th by Dr. Kessel, who was with his son-in-law for a few days previous to his death, and Lieut. Daniel J. Curran, military escort, who was a close friend of the deceased, having been associated with Lieut. Shackleton in their work at all three fields, they being transferred together.
Private burial services, conforming to the etiquette of the United States Army, were held on the afternoon of December 25th, from the residence of Dr. Kessel, with interment at Oak Lawn. The military escorts and pall bearers were Capt. George Plummer, Lieutenants Daniel J Curran, Orvin Daley, Leonard Lyons, Martin Daley, James Daley, Sargeant Ben Smith and Ralph Richards.
The Brooklyn Eagle of Dec, 17th says: “Lieutenant Allan D. Shackleton, Air Service, U. S. A., died of pneumonia at Kelley Field, Tex., on Dec. 20th, and was buried at the home of his wife, at Cresco, Ia., on Christmas day.
