Pioneer Resident Dies.
After along and busy life, filled with good deeds and noble aspirations, at the ripe and golden age of 92, on Wednesday morning, July 31, Mrs. George V. Puntney passed to her eternal reward. In failing strength for a number of months, yet with that buoyant spirit which has carried her through the years, she pressed on until God called her to come up higher.
Sarah Truman was born March 2, 1826, in the county of Tyrone, Ireland.
When a child of four years, she came to the United States with her parents who settled in Philadelphia. Later the family moved to Quebec, Canada, where nearly thirty years of her life was spent. She was living at Hesper, Iowa, at the time of her marriage to George Veasy Puntney on June 30th, 1873. After their marriage they lived in Hardin county, Iowa, for a few years and then came back to the old pioneer homestead which Mr. Puntney bought of the government in 1856. After some years of residence here and at Plymouth Rock, they moved to Cresco over twenty-five years ago to spend their declining years and to enjoy the privileges of the church services. Most tenderly have they been cared for in the home of the daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. L. P. Sanborn.
Mrs. Puntney was one of a family of nine children and being of a rugged constitution and splendid health, she survived them all. For thirty-five years, she faithfully and gladly shared the lot of her husband and lovingly cared for his five motherless children.
In 1843 she united with the Methodist Episcopal church in Philadelphia. She was a devout woman of great faith and steadfast purpose and as she advanced in years, she increased faith and Christ likeness verifying in her own life the truth of the word, “The path of the just is as the shining light that shines more and more unto the perfect day.” Very quietly and peacefully she passes to her eternal reward in the early morning of July 31, 1918, age 92 years, 4 months and 29 days.
Besides the husband, G. V. Puntney now in his 98th years, she is survived by W. V. Puntney of Akin, Minn.’ Mrs. Dora Wanless of Vancouver, Wash., Harker of Mason City, Ia., and Mrs. L. P. Sanborn of Cresco besides twelve grandchildren and hosts of friends.
The funeral service was held at the Methodist church Friday at 10:30 conducted by her pastor, Rev. E. G. Copeland. Music was furnished by Mrs. Lois Phillips and Mrs. Frank Paul with Mrs. W. W. Nichols at the organ. The floral offerings were beautiful. Interment was made at New Oregon.
Out of town relatives attending the funeral were: W. V. Puntney of Aikin, Minn.; Harker Puntney of Mason City; Phil Sanborn of Council Bluffs; Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Griffith of Lime Springs; Mr. and Mrs. Dell Lange and Mrs. Dora Headington of Decorah; and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Lange, Mrs. Will Lange and Mrs. Sibert of Bluffton, Iowa.
