OBITUARY.
DRAKE.
Arthur Verian Drake was the third son of Austin Sherman Drake and Ada Victoria De Laski, and was born at Eau Clair, Wisconsin, on the 23rd of July, 1874.
He completed his education at the Stitson University of De Land, Florida, where he took military training and specialized in the French and Spanish languages, both of which he spoke and wrote fluently. From there he went to Porto{sic} Rico as tutor to the Spanish consul’s family. At the time of the Spanish war he was the only American left there and through the efforts of this Government an English ship touched at Miaguay and brought him to Boston.
For several years he worked in the Times office at Cresco, Iowa, and also in the Plain Dealer office in this city at different times. Mr. Drake was a member of the Cresco Militia and won several state medals on the rifle team. Later he was a member of Company G at Waterloo, Iowa. When the present war opened he endeavored to enlist and at the examination for this, the disease that carried him away was discovered. He was a member of the Waterloo Fire Department for about six years.
The deceased, at the age of 43 years, 8 months and 27 days, passed away at his home at 1410 Franklin St., Waterloo, Iowa, Saturday, April 20, 1918, leaving a wife and one son, Chester Verian, age one year.
A short service was held at the Kistner Chapel, Waterloo, Iowa, conducted by Rev. Askins of the First Baptist Church.
Among the beautiful floral offerings were designed from the City Fire Department, the local orders of Odd Fellows, Rebeccahs{sic} and the Tribe of Ben Hur to which he belonged.
Mr. Drake was a man of sterling character and a kind and loving husband and father.
The wife accompanied the body to Cresco where Rev. Pettit conducted a service at the home of Mrs. Ada Barker, a cousin of the deceased, on Tuesday afternoon Interment was made in Oak Lawn Cemetery.
