Dale Holstrom, 95, of Cresco, Iowa passed away peacefully on May 30th at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. He was surrounded by his children and their spouses.

Dale was born on January 26, 1929 in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. He was the son of Fred and Helen (Bales) Holstrom. Dale graduated from Lehigh High School in May of 1946 and enlisted in the Navy the same month. After his honorable discharge from the Navy he enrolled in Iowa State Teachers College and went on to teach Industrial Arts, Algebra, and Physics along with Drivers Education.

Dale met the love of his life, Catharine Culbert, in 1955 and they were married later that year. In 1956 they moved to Bloomington, MN where Dale taught in the Minneapolis School District. He joined the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers union and became the president of the Federation in 1963. In 1968 he earned his Masters Degree in School Administration. At the same time Dale was hired by the Minneapolis Federation to be their Executive Director.

In 1976 Dale and Catharine moved back to Catharine’s home town of Cresco to purchase Leo’s Jewelry Store, eventually changing the name to Holstrom’s Gift and Jewelry. Dale was an active member of Kiwanis, the Cresco Chamber of Commerce and was the Chairman of the fundraising committee to build the Fitness Center. He also occasionally participated in Cresco Community Theater.

Dale always enjoyed greeting people, woodworking, golf, building decks with family, and even making and serving smash burgers.

Left to honor Dale and remember his love are his children Deborah (Richard) Forslund, Edina, MN; Sue (friend Bob) Holstrom, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Jim (Barb) Holstrom, Cresco, Iowa; grandchildren Daniel (Rebecca) Sabatka; Melissa (Rick) White; Jennifer Sabatka; Christopher (Kristin) Holstrom; Brittany (Scott) Tieskotter; great grandchildren Cole, Addison, Alivia, Landen, Natalie, Finley, Brandon, Harrison, Zoey; sister in-law Martha (Maury) Kramer as well as many nieces, nephews, and countless good friends.

Dale was preceded in death by his wife Catharine, brother Don (Charlotte) and parents Fred and Helen.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff at Gundersen for the care and thoughtfulness given to Dale and the family during his stay.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Oak Lawn Cemetery or to a charity of your choice.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 22, 2024 at McAllister’s Heritage Event Center in Cresco. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the event center. Inurnment will take place in Oak Lawn Cemetery with full military honors. Lindstrom Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
