Hotel Fire Costs a Life!
Last Monday morning at about 4:30 o’clock W. F. Scholz discovered smoke issuing from the roof of the Arlington Hotel and gave the alarm, assisting L. J. Long the proprietor, to awaken the lodgers, several of whom were in the building which has been used for sometime solely for roomers, no meals being served. Although the building burned slowly, the rooms were so densely filled with smoke that very little of the contents was saved. It was quite generally supposed that every person in the building had been awakened and was out in safety, but after the fire had burned over one hour, Fred. Hamilton heard groans in a room on the second floor in the northwest corner of the building. Art Converse and Fred Burr entered the room and found Louis F. Markovetz so badly burned that the overalls and shirt he wore had nearly burned off him. He was taken to the hospital but never regained consciousness and died Wednesday morning. Accounts of the reason for his death vary, and there are some suspicious things in connection with the affair, as the proprietor of the hotel and persons early on the scene were very sure that every one was called and out of the building.
The building was one of the old landmarks of Cresco, having been used as a hotel for over 40 years. It was owned by L. J. Long who will probably not rebuild. We understand that Mr. Long carried insurance of $3,500 on building and contents.
