Sudden Death at Elma.
August Mantz died sometime Thursday night of Friday morning. He was found at 6 o’clock this (Friday) morning by Earl Shroeder in the latter’s yard. Mr. Mantz was seated in the buggy and the horse was standing patiently awaiting directions from a voice that was stilled forever.
Mr. Mantz had gone out to Crane Creek Thursday, as he had often done before, to spend the day in fishing. When he did not return home in the evening the family instituted search and all night long several automobiles filled with anxious friends traversed the country roads and search was made along the creek, but it was not until daylight that the mystery of his disappearance was solved. Mr. Mantz has been a sufferer from rheumatism and heart trouble for several years and it is believed he was stricken on his way home and that the horse he was driving wandered into Schroeder’s yard.—Elma New Era.

Transcriber’s Note: His gravestone in Howard Cementery shows he was born Mar. 27, 1854 and died Oct. 25, 1917.
