Dolores “Dee” Maureen (Sorensen) Farrell passed away peacefully on the morning of Wednesday, May 1, 2024 at the Accura Healthcare Nursing Home in Cresco.

Dee was born January 31, 1955 to Lawo (Red) Sorensen and Marian (Aschenbrenner) Sorensen in Pocahontas, Iowa. She was the youngest of four children proceeded by her brothers Larry and Harry and her sister, Myrna. Dee was baptized and confirmed in the United Methodist Church in Laurens, Iowa, and graduated from Laurens Community School in 1973. She married on July 14, 1973 to Richard (Dick) Farrell with whom she had two children, Melanie and Todd. They later divorced in 1992. After the divorce Dee attended Upper Iowa University where she graduated in the spring of 1997 with a degree in accounting.

After graduation Dee worked various accounting jobs. She always stayed active with her church and in her community. She was a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Protivin, Iowa and was a committed hospice volunteer for several years.

Dee was a devoted mother first and foremost. Later in life she shifted her focus to being a loving grandmother to her three grandchildren. Dee was a committed partner to her significant other, Randy Buchheit, for more than 25 years. Dee’s family and friends meant everything to her. When she was not at home you could probably find her with friends in town or coming down to Iowa City with Randy to see her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her partner of 25 years, Randy Buchheit, her daughter Melanie Smith (Nick) of Iowa City, her grandsons, Ronan, Finn, and Desmond Smith, her sister, Myrna Sorensen (Marv) of Sioux City, her brother, Harry Sorensen of Norfolk, Nebraska, her nieces and nephews, Dr. Scott (Aimee) Sorensen of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, Dr. Tony (Laura) Sorensen of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Jennifer (Jon) Van’t Hul of Waukee, Iowa, Amanda Buchanan of Norfolk, Nebraska, her great nieces and great nephews, Cali (Connor) Gosse of Laramie, Wyoming, Jaylie, Jelsie, Jovie, and Jilanie Van’t Hul of Waukee, Iowa, and Layla, Blake, and Abel Buchanan of Norfolk, Nebraska.

Dee was preceded in death by her son Todd Farrell, her parents Red and Marian Sorensen, her brother, Larry Sorensen, and her daughter-in-law, Tami Farrell.

Dee was an organ donor and has chosen to donate her body to the University of Iowa.

Services will be held at 2:00pm on Monday, May 6, 2024 at the United Methodist Church in Cresco. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church on Monday afternoon. A private family burial is planned at the St. Luke’s Cemetery in St. Lucas, Iowa in the future.
