MRS. JOHN BIRTWHISTLE
Alice Grundy was born in Preston, Lancashire, England, May 6, 1837, died
in Cresco, Iowa, September 9, 1902 at 9:15 p.m., aged 65 years, 4 months,
3 days.She came to America November 5, 1855 and was married at Ottawa, Ill. Dec.
27, 1855 to John Birtwhistle.In 1857 they removed to Iowa and settled on a farm near Kendallville, but
have lived in Cresco many years.They were the parents of three sons and one daughter, the eldest son died
in infancy, the daughter, Mrs. Edgar Taft, died six years ago, John E.
resides in Chicago and William in Cresco, who, with the bereaved husband
and grandchildren mourn the loss of an affectionate capable wife, mother
and grand parent.Mrs. Birtwhistle had a slight stroke of paralysis several months ago.
Later she suffered another stroke from which she did not entirely
recover. The third stroke released her in a few hours from earthly
suffering.Funeral services were conducted Friday at the Congregational church by
Rev. Marshall.Her son John and family from Chicago, and Mrs. Jane Sanaford of Joliet.
Ill., sister of Mr. Birtwhistle, were in attendance. Beautiful flowers
and many friends testified to the loving esteem in which she had dwelt.
In Oak Lawn sleeps her earthly form.---------

Alice Grundy was born in Preston, Lancaster, England, May 6, 1837, and came to America, Nov. 5, 1855. She was married to John Birtwistle, Dec. 27, 1855, in Ottawa, ILL, and came Winneshiek Co. in 1857, locating near Kendallville and afterwards moving to Cresco where they have since resided with the exception of a few years spent in Chicago.
There was born to them three sons and one daughter. The eldest son Edward, died in Illinois, and the daughter, Mrs. Edgar Taft, died in Cresco. Two sons are still living, John E. in Chicago and William in Cresco.
Alice Birtwistle died of Paralysis of brain, Sept. 9, at 9:15 p. M., aged 65 years, 4 months and 3 days. The funeral was held Friday afternoon at the Congregational church, Rev. C. A. Marshall officiating. The interment was in the Oak Lawn cemetery.

Friends were pained to learn of the death of Mrs. John Birtwhistle of Cresco, Mrs. Birtwhistle was formerly a resident of Kendallville.
