Evelyn Clara Chyle was born November 20, 1925, the daughter of Wenceslaus “Jim” and Clara Anna (Komarek) Chyle. She attended Rudolphinum Catholic School in Protivin through the eighth grade, many times walking the long distance to get there. On April 12, 1944, she was united in marriage to Clarence Steffen at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin, IA. After moving to town they enjoyed fishing, playing cards, eating out and visiting with their friends. She also liked to ride her bicycle. Evelyn and Clarence liked to listen to old time and big band music. They traveled out west and around to see the local countryside. They traveled to Lincoln, NE, to visit their son and his family, or met them halfway to visit. Evelyn was a member of the Notre Dame Parish and Altar and Rosary Society. After Clarence passed away in August of 2009, Evelyn made her home at Evans Assisted Living. She moved into Evans Memorial Home in May of 2011.

She is survived by her son Chris Steffen of Lincoln, NE; two grandchildren Katherine “Katy” (Jeremy) Friend of Portland, OR and Michael Steffen of Lincoln, NE; two great granddaughters Madalyn and Brielle Friend of Portland, OR, sister-in-law Marion Steffen, brother-in-law Gerald “Jerry” (Elaine) Steffen; and several nieces and nephews.
