Raphael Joseph “Ray” Maravetz, age 89, of Riceville, passed away Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at home in the arms of his loving wife, Ann.
Ray was born February 19, 1932 to Lewis and Louise (Shimek) Maravetz in Howard County, Iowa. He was the fifth born into the family. He served in the Army from 1952 to 1954 in Heavy Artillery during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant. Ray went to work at the Oliver tractor Factory and then later worked with his brother Arnold doing body work on cars. In 1958, he started his own body shop in Riceville. In his 60 plus years of business, he enjoyed talking to the people and working on their vehicles.
Ray loved to fish! He found the “catch of his life”, Anna Mae “Ann” Lipa and married her on June 10, 1957. They have been together for 63 plus years, making their home in the town of Riceville, later moving to the outskirts near Lake Hendricks where they had two children. Ray enjoyed hunting, gardening and working side by side with Ann. He loved attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, but most of all just being around family and friends.
During his lifetime, Ray was involved in the Riceville Community Club, a boy scout leader, a volunteer fireman for over 20 years, a charter member of the Riceville Jaycees, and a proud member of the American Legion for 62 years. He will be remembered as a hardworking, joke telling, loving man who was always surrounded with friends and family.
He is survived by his wife Ann, his children, Pam (Craig) Downing of Manly, Iowa and Randy (Sandy) Maravetz of Charles City, Iowa, grandchildren; Robert Maravetz, Rashelle Peters, Matt Peters, Sonya Kelley, Tiffanny Downing, Doug Duryee, Jacob (Albanie) Downing and Cody Downing (Michelle Wright), great grandchildren; Emersyn Maravetz, Brynlee and Colsen Downing, a sister, Marge Weber of Charles City, Iowa and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and a brother.
