Death of Hon. George W. Merry.
Honorable George Willey Merry, one of the pioneer and highly respected citizens of Grant county, answered the trumpet call of the death angel at 5:00 o’clock on Monday morning of this week and passed on into the great unknown world. His demise was the result of an ailment which had been bothering him for years and which confined him to his bed the greater part of the time for several weeks past during which period the spark of life continued to slowly but steadily ebb away despite all that medical science, loving hands and hearts could do.
During a residence of thirty years in Grant county Mr. Merry at all times commanded the respect and confidence of his fellow citizens. In 1906 he was elected to the state senate from Grant county and as a member of that body served with credit to himself and his constituency. Up until the last few years he was actively engaged in cattle shipping and farming, in both of which he was successful. Honest and honorable in all things, a firm believer in the doctrine of doing to others as you would that others do unto you, a true friend and an ideal neighbor, Geo. W. Merry in departing this world leaves behind him a life record well worthy of emulation.
Deceased was born at Magog, province of Quebec, Canada, December 14, 1839. He came to the United States with his parents in 1856 and settled in Paris township. Iowa, where he resided until 1885 when he came to Grant county and continued to make his residence here until the end. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Alice J. Merry, and one daughter, Mrs. Ella Wein, of Ortonville, Minn., and one sister, Mrs. Emma Blake, Minneapolis.
A short funeral service was held at the family home in this city conducted by Rev. Harry Evans, pastor of the Congregational church, of which the deceased had been a faithful member. The attendance at the service was very large and the floral tributes many and beautiful. The remains were shipped to Cresco, Iowa, on the midnight train Tuesday where interment will be made in Oak Lawn cemetery. Mrs. Merry and Mr. and Mrs. Niles accompanied the remains to Cresco.—Grant County (S. D.) Review, Jan. 7, 1915.
